Environmental Protection Agency exempts milk from its spill clean up regulations

A proposed U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulation that would have required spilled milk to be treated the same as spilled oil was quashed this month, an exemption that farmers across the country had requested for months.

The announcement, which came from Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-NY, on April 13, was welcomed by local lawmakers, who said that the regulation was ridiculous, and unrealistic for cash-strapped farmers.

County Legislature Majority Leader Ken Herrington, whose family operates a dairy farm, called the EPA rule “a costly regulatory disaster,” and said the “bad idea” was nothing more than “an example of unnecessary and out of control government regulations.”

“Northeast farmers have enough to deal with, given the tough economy and tough markets,” added Legislator Alex Shannon. “These regulations would have meant real problems for dairy farmers and it is good news for the dairy industry that they will be exempted from these onerous rules.”
