12 children on field trip to Palace Theater in Albany hurt in bus crash
RENSSELAER — Twelve children on a school field trip were sent to the hospital Monday morning after the two school buses they were riding in hit each other.
Deputy Police Chief James Frankoski said the Schodack Central School District buses were headed to the Palace Theater in Albany when one bus rear-ended the other near the intersection of South Street and Columbia Turnpike around 10:15 a.m.
The buses radioed their bus garage to report the accident, Frankoski said, and checked on the status of students.
“There were no signs of any injuries at the time, so they continued on,” he said.
But students began complaining of soreness soon afterward, Frankoski said, and EMS responders were called when the buses reached Albany. Rensselaer Police were also notified, he said, and are continuing to investigate the accident.
Schodack Superintendent Robert Horan said only two students were initially taken to Albany Medical Center, but that number quickly rose to 12, mostly as a precautionary measure.
All the children had been released by Monday afternoon, he said. None of the injuries, including some bumped heads and bruises, was serious.
Horan said he was working with Rensselaer police to determine what exactly happened.
“From what I heard, the bus driver thought she actually hit a pothole. ... They weren’t even sure if they hit a pothole or bumped into each other,” he said.
One kindergartener and 11 second-graders were among those taken to the hospital. Both drivers of the buses were uninjured, and there is no apparent damage to either vehicle, Horan added. Continued...

He would not release the names of the bus drivers, and did not know how long either of them had been employed by the district.
