COHOES — It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s – no, it’s a bird. A racing pigeon to be exact.
A gold-colored pigeon, believed to be a racing pigeon, landed in the backyard of Shelley and Joe Houser and it has made daily visits there for over a week. Now the Cohoes couple is trying to find the bird’s owner.
Due to the solid and pretty color of the pigeon, the Housers have been calling the bird “Peaches.”
On the first day it arrived, it came in from the wooded area behind their house and flew on top of their shed to survey the area. Then it flew down to the above ground pool and tried to get a drink of water.
It can’t quite reach the pool so the Houser’s daughter, Abbey, took a Tupperware container of water and brought it up to the bird very slowly. The pigeon drank the water while the 9-year-old stood there and held the clear container. It’s been placed on the rim of the pool ever since and refilled daily.
“She’s very friendly,” said Shelley about the bird which has a purple band with letters and numbers on its right leg. “She’s also very fast. When she takes off, she takes off.”
Pigeon racing, according to Wikipedia, is the sport of releasing specially trained racing pigeons, which then return to their homes over a carefully measured distance. The ancient sport has grown in popularity over the years and there is now a show with Mike Tyson on Animal Planet called “Taking on Tyson” about his pigeon racing hobby.
“For all I know this might be Mike Tyson’s pigeon,” said Houser.
The Housers have tried to find the owner online by posting on Facebook and plugging in the identifying code on its bracelet, but to no avail. Continued...
So Peaches’ daily routine of visiting in the early morning, and sometimes in the afternoon before being scared away by squirrels, continues.
“She always comes in from the east and goes out that same way,” said Houser. “All this makes me think she belongs to someone and we just want to make sure we find the owner.”
