Incoming? Bombers could land in downtown Troy this fall

TROY — Come late fall, there will be a new Bombers location in Troy where customers can get all the food and services they’ve grown accustomed to at its Albany and Schenectady locations, including the free birthday margarita, said franchisee Tami Dzembo.

Three seems to be the lucky number for Bombers and this new project. The Troy location has been in the works for three years and this is the third Troy building that has been considered. The soon-to-be-franchise will have three locations.

“Third time’s the charm,” said Dzembo.

The location now being considered is at 2 King St., across the way from a vibrant area of the city including establishments like Ryan’s Wake, Jose Malone’s, and Brown’s Brewing Co.

C2 Design Architecture, based in Schenectady, has been working for nearly two months on the conceptual site plan which will be discussed at the June 16 Planning Board meeting. It will take nearly $700,000 of work to renovate the turn of the 20th century brick edifice, which is a former hotel and used to have four stories until a fire many years ago. Most recently it was Rensselaer County ARC site.

Providing the project is approved and everything goes as planned, construction could begin by mid to late July and finish in late fall, said Michael Roman with C2.

He explained that the two-story building revitalization would have an exterior patio, new bathrooms, and a kitchen. Seating capacity would be around 180, with 2,900 square feet on the first floor and 2,800 on the second floor.

While sticking with Bombers staples like the food, drink specials, annual free burrito day, arcade games and weekly karaoke and trivia nights, one difference at the new location will be the bar’s first floor location.

“It’s going to be a nice bar so that’s more about the visibility since you’ll be able to see the bar from the street,” explained Dzembo. “This is a perfect spot.”

Donald Boyajian, an attorney with the well-known Dreyer Boyajian firm, owns 2 King St. According to Dzembo, Boyajian plans to tear down the buildings nearby, including 4 King St., but it is not yet known what will become of the property. She said it could become a parking lot. Continued...

Just beyond that property is the Cloud 9 building, a formerly-infamous spot in Troy. At 14 King St., it was shuttered for numerous code violations and is currently on the market for $275,000.

“This is an important block for the city to focus on,” said Vic Christopher, the city’s economic development coordinator, noting that the Bombers location was not a city project.

Prior locations considered for the proposed Bombers included 87 Fourth St., near Proctor’s, and a site on River Street.

Dzembo said the contracts for the Bombers construction will go out to bid on June 30 and bids will be approved by July 18.

“This is a long time coming,” she said.

" Nice to see that this small yet vital stretch is being redeveloped finally. The King St / River St circle adds to the already thriving marina area. Any ideas to add more feel of a real downtown would be a refreshing welcome. Boyajian tearing down that building instead of trying to redevelop it would be a travesty. The property alone, while adding additional parking, could be served better in other aspects. Kudos Ms. Dzembo and thank you for giving Troy a second thought. "

" Many years ago there was a very successful submarine sandwich shop close to this location, called "Lebits Hoagies". Owned and oberated by 2 insurance people named S.Joseph Barakat and Sam Bosko. This is a really great bit of news to those of us that enjoy a culinary delight. "
