Troy PD investigating one of their own
TROY — Police are conducting an internal affairs investigation into an alleged incident at the Red Front Restaurant Saturday night involving one of the department’s sergeants.
“We are confirming we are investigating an incident at the Red Front Restaurant that occurred last night,” said Capt. John Cooney, the department spokesman said Sunday. “It is an internal affairs investigation and the parties involved will be named only and after the investigation and if it is warranted.”
Sources say Sgt. John Coons appeared intoxicated and was belligerent about the fact he was not getting the promotion to captain, which instead went to Sgt. Joseph Centanni, whose mother Joan works at the Red Front.
Sources say some of his outburst was directed at Joan Centanni.
Sources also say Coons was in the company of Deputy Chief Richard McAvoy, the second-in-command at the Troy Police Department.
Officers from the department’s Internal Affairs division were at the popular Division Street restaurant on Sunday, according to sources, to answer complaints from patrons and staff.
A staffer from the restaurant said nothing out of the ordinary happened on Saturday night when asked Sunday.
The promotion of Centanni to captain riled a bunch of the rank and file. He tied for third on the Civil Service list and tied for third on the captain’s test. Christopher Kehn scored the highest on the captain exam followed by Coons. Thomas Bevevino and Centanni tied for third.
Chief John Tedesco can hire anyone of the top three on the list.
Centanni was chosen to replace Capt. Mitch Paurowski, who retires later this month. Centanni will be in charge of the overnight platoon, Tedesco said previously. Continued...
Filling Centanni’s position as sergeant will be Officer Shane Kiley, who is currently assigned to the downtown walking patrol, the chief said.
They will be sworn in May 2.
Citing budgetary concerns, Tedesco said it is undecided whether the department will fill another vacancy expected among its eight captains once one is promoted to replace Assistant Chief Anthony Magnetto, who retires June 6.
