Police identify body found in Waterford as that of a 44-year-old Cohoes resident who was well-known in the arts community

WATERFORD — The body found at Peebles Island State Park Friday has been identified as that of 44-year-old Nadia A. Trinkala.

Dan Keefe, spokesman for the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, confirmed Trinkala’s identity Sunday, adding that no foul play is suspected in her death.

Trinkala’s body was found off a park trail Friday afternoon. An autopsy performed this weekend was inconclusive, Keefe said, and New York State Park Police, who are handling the investigation, are awaiting the results of a toxicology report.

Trinkala, a longtime Cohoes resident, was known for her work in the local arts community, said Cohoes Mayor John McDonald.

Trinkala had previously operated a furniture and art store in the Spindle City, McDonald said, and in 2004 opened Trink Gallery, a vintage and mid-century modern art store on River Street in Troy.

“Trink was a very special person in many aspects,” McDonald said. “She always had a smile on her face and always had an interest in what you were doing. She was very well-loved.”

McDonald said Trinkala’s death was “very troubling” for him and her legion of friends, calling her loss “a tragedy.”

“There’s a lot of people who are really living with heavy hearts tonight,” he said.

Trinkala’s is the second body to be found at Peebles Island in the past month.

On March 19, the body of Jerold Utter was found by hikers at the park, and had to be recovered by a Waterford diving team from the fast-moving water surrounding the park. Continued...

An autopsy determined Utter died from asphyxiation and hypothermia, and his death was ruled a suicide. There were no signs of foul play.
