Officials say Vt.-NY bridge late and over budget

WEST ADDISON, Vt. — Construction of a new bridge across Lake Champlain between Vermont and New York is behind its original schedule and over budget, officials said during a public meeting in Vermont.

Speaking at a public meeting on the bridge project in West Addison, New York officials said the extra time and cost were due to difficulties clearing from the lake debris from the old bridge that was imploded in late 2009 after it was declared unsafe.

"We have spent additional money on overcoming the obstructions. We spent additional money on trying to accelerate some of the items of work, to get back some of the time we lost due to those obstructions," said John Grady, an engineer with the New York Department of Transportation. "The project will come in several million dollars more than the original bid."

Earlier this year the contractor was given 65 extra days to finish the bridge.

"Some of the things we've been doing is increasing some of the overtime on the job, working longer hours, we increased the number of forms, we tried to use multiple sets of forms rather than waiting for them to get done in one place," Grady said. "We've brought in additional barges and cranes, a variety of ways in order to find the best ways to get on track."

Meanwhile, construction is continuing. The last concrete pier will be poured next week and the steel is being installed.

The bridge is scheduled to open Oct. 9.
